A Brief History of Equal Temperament (And Why Your Piano Is Technically Out of Tune)
Here's a fun fact that surprises most people: your piano, even when it's been freshly and perfectly tuned, is technically out of tune. Every single note on it is a tiny bit wrong. And that's on purpose.
To understand why, we need to go back a few centuries. For a long time, instruments were tuned so that certain keys sounded absolutely pure. If you played in C major, the chords would ring with this gorgeous, resonant clarity. But here's the catch — what sounded perfect in C major sounded terrible in, say, F-sharp major. The math behind musical intervals doesn't allow every key to be perfectly in tune at the same time. Something has to give.
For centuries, musicians and instrument makers worked around this problem with various compromises. They'd tune a keyboard so that the most commonly used keys sounded great and just avoid the ones that didn't. These were called "temperaments," and there were dozens of them, each with different trade-offs.
When people talk about Bach's "Well-Tempered Clavier," they're talking about this exact issue. Bach wrote pieces in every major and minor key to show that a well-chosen temperament could make all of them sound acceptable. He wasn't using modern equal temperament — that came later — but he was pushing toward the idea that you shouldn't have to avoid half the keys on your instrument.
Equal temperament, which is what your piano is tuned to today, takes the ultimate democratic approach. It spreads the imperfection equally across all twelve notes. Every key is equally slightly wrong. No key sounds perfect, but every key sounds good enough. It's a compromise, and it's the compromise that won.
The result is that if you play a single major third on a well-tuned piano and really listen, you might notice a slight wavering — a beat frequency — that wouldn't be there if the interval were mathematically pure. Most people don't notice this, and our ears have been trained on equal temperament for so long that it sounds normal to us. But it's there.
Why does this matter for you as a piano owner? Mostly it doesn't, except as a piece of dinner-party trivia. But it does help explain why tuning is more art than science. Your tuner isn't just matching frequencies to a chart. They're listening to how intervals interact across the whole keyboard and making small adjustments based on the specific character of your instrument. Two pianos tuned to the exact same frequencies can sound different because of differences in their soundboards, strings, and hammers. A good tuning accounts for all of that.
The fact that every piano is a beautiful, carefully managed compromise is part of what makes the instrument so fascinating. It's never perfect. But in the right hands, it gets pretty close.
